“Bernard Carney is a great all-round musician in the tradition of the folk troubadour. He has a unique talent as songwriter, guitarist and singer all peppered with passion and humour” - Port Fairy Festival Director, Jamie McKew.
Bernard is a song writer, guitarist and singer with a decptively simple, yet witty touch and a strong sense of
humour inherited from his native Lancashire. England lost him to the sunny shores of
Perth, Western Australia some thirty years ago - but he reinvades his homeland once a year to remind us of what we're missing.
His shows focus on original songs which are exceptional for the wit and smartness of the lyrics and the flawless guitar style that accompanies them. He might sing you his ode to the common cold, 'The Bronchio-dilated Blues,' or
his songwriting song, 'Here Comes the Chorus.' He's an exceptional wordsmith and
plays effortless fingerpicking blues-stule guitar.
“Bernard’s is a warm and friendly style, the musical equivalent of a hug with a funny punch line.”
- Lincoln Review
In March 2003 Bernard's success as a major songwriter was recognised by the Port Fairy Festival, Victoria, where he was named Artist of the Year and also won the prestigious Lawson Patterson Songwriting Award. He has previously won three other major Australian songwriting awards.
“Songs of love and memory are bittersweet explorations of human emotion sung with a kind of melodic elegance that is the hall mark of a good song.” - Ron Banks West Australian 2003
Often silly, always entertaining, Bernard also has a strong streak of
passion for humanity. His landmine song, 'Gardens of Death,' (winner of a
Western Australian Music Industry Award) has been used as the musical dialogue
for an educational video 'Shattered Lives' produced by the International Red
Cross in Geneva. As a result it's been taken up - worldwide - by the
Soroptimists and his audience outside the folk world is growing. And back at
home, he plays festivals, arts centres, theatres and community venues all over the continent and in his spare time he leads 'Working Voices' the combined Australian trades union choir.
“His immaculate ragtime based finger picking has got smoother and swingier; the voice has rounded and matured like a well kept cab sav and his musical vocabulary has expanded without ever getting detached from its roots... Bernard has become a major influence on guitarists and songwriters around Australia.” - Fairbridge Festival Director, Steve Barnes, 2003
Bernard is a popular, prominent and regular guest at Australia’s major acoustic music festivals including Woodford Festival in Queensland (for 12 consecutive years), Port Fairy Festival in Victoria, the National Folk Festival in Canberra, plus WA’s Bridgetown Blues Festival, Fairbridge and Nannup Folk Festivals. He regularly tours the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore and has performed with international artists such as Gene Pitney, Taj Mahal, Foster and Allen, Ralph McTell, Richard Thompson and had the honour of opening Stephane Grapelli’s final concert at the Perth Concert Hall. He's appeared weekly on ABC TV as the political satirist for the 7.30 Report in Brisbane, summing up the week's events in song. Prior to that he wrote topical satire for ABC Radio in Perth. Bernard has nine successful albums all recorded in Perth. His latest album “West” celebrates 175 years of European settlement in West Australia. His humorous take on computer love affairs “My Little Dot Com” from his previous CD “Feathers and Tributes” has been on national ABC play lists for the past two years.
"Bernard Carney is impressive as a socially informed, humorous and entertaining performer" -Australian Options Magazine

EXTRAS FOR FESTIVALS
As well as Bernard’s concert performances he can offer
“Round Singing for the Soul” - better than chicken soup!
Bernard Carney and his wife Eleanor (who always travels with him) have been running choirs and presenting singing
sessions at festivals for years. They have a huge collection of rounds old and
new, easy and tricky, sacred and silly, some with actions, some with movement,
all taught in a friendly manner resulting in joyous instant harmony and good
singing fun. 1-1.5 hours.
"Bernard's Big Beatles Singalong"
Bernard has also instigated the famous “Beatles Sing-along” at Australian
festivals such as Woodford, Port Fairy and the Canberra National, where he
will assemble a scratch band from festival musicians, lead some popular hits
and invite guests to sing a Beatles song. The crowd enjoys the sing and hearing performers doing material outside their usual repertoire. Notable UKguests in
Australia have been Chris While and Julie Matthews, Bob Fox and Jez Lowe.
